Healthcare

Dolores knows that a healthy community is a productive community. To that end, she will work side-by-side with her colleagues in Tallahassee to ensure that the people in District 27 aren’t forced to use the emergency room as their primary care doctor.

Currently, there are over 35,000 people in West Volusia without healthcare. Increasing access and eliminating financial concerns will dramatically improve the lives of all residents.

As a healthcare Navigator, Dolores was forced to tell families that because they lived under the poverty level, they could not get the healthcare they needed. That firsthand experience has inspired her to help change these policies. Dolores is committed to creating a network of doctors and clinics that work together with the West Volusia Hospital Authority to ensure that all families, regardless of income, have access to quality healthcare.

Education

Dolores recognizes that not every child who graduates from high school will attend college. For some, student loan debt is an ever-growing barrier that prevents them from pursuing higher education. For others, vocational school will prove to be the preferred educational option.

Dolores will work on behalf of every child by alleviating the pressure on students to pay an exorbitant price for college and providing more vocational school opportunities within the Volusia County school system. Teaching a trade to students while they attend high school will provide financial stability when they graduate. Being a product of vocational schools herself, Dolores has seen the value of vocational education in the community.

Affordable housing

Dolores is passionate about ensuring that every person in District 27 has a safe place to sleep at night. Unfortunately, District 27 is facing an affordable housing crisis.

To afford to pay $1300/month in rent, a family must make an average of $21/hour. This burden often requires people to work 2-3 jobs and forces multiple families to live together in homes created as single-family dwellings.

Access to affordable housing is even more challenging for seniors living on social security. Dolores feels this is one of the most important issues and promises to go to Tallahassee and fight tirelessly to find a solution. Environment

Dolores sees great opportunity for the Sunshine State to slow the progression of climate change and protect the environment by supporting:

  • Solar panels: Incentivizing homeowners to increase solar panel installation though tax breaks and subsidies
  • Windmills: Leveraging established approaches within the agricultural industry to increase efficiency and decrease production costs
  • Recycling: Stepping up efforts to ban single-use plastics, such as straws, and finding ways to incentivize companies and communities to continue recycling programs

Economy

Dolores knows that many people in District 27 work multiple jobs in order to support their families. While that has contributed to the lowest unemployment rate in 50 years, Dolores believes that re-educating the workforce and pressuring companies to pay a living wage will also improve quality of life for many residents.

District 27 is well-situated to capitalize on “green” business and bring in renewable energy companies that will create new jobs and slow the progression of climate change.

Gun Safety

Dolores is committed to governing with gun safety in mind. Her work as an advocate for gun violence prevention was recognized by Moms Demand Action, who designated her as a 2020 Gun Sense Candidate.

Moms Demand Action is part of Everytown for Gun Safety and is the nation’s largest grassroots volunteer network working to end gun violence in America. With nearly six million supporters and volunteer chapters in every state, Moms Demand Action campaigns for new and stronger solutions to lax gun laws and loopholes that jeopardize the safety of our families.
